The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – commonly known as just Coachella – is an annual event, held in the California desert, with many genres of music as well as art installations and sculptures.
Although officially founded in 1999, the festival’s origins trace back to a Pearl Jam concert in 1993. They deliberately chose to perform at the Empire Polo Club to boycott the high processing fees handled by Ticketmaster.
That concert proved the site’s viability for hosting large events, leading to the two-day long inaugural Coachella Festival in October 1999. After no event was held in 2000, Coachella returned on an annual basis beginning in April 2001, as a single-day event. Which in 2002 reverted again to a two-day format, expanded with a third day in 2007 and eventually added a second weekend, with an identical line-up, in 2012.
Organisers began permitting spectators to camp on the grounds in 2003, one of several expansions and additions of amenities that have been made in the festival’s history.
Today Coachella is not just a music festival but has become a major event for showing off your personal style.
I know that probably many of you will not be there, but just imagine the California sunshine, a Ferris wheel behind you and a huge stage in front of you, a massive crowd feeling the music to the bone.
