1. 1970s Rebellious Youth Portraits Captured By High School Teacher

Joe Szabo is a teacher, photographer, and author who taught photography at Malverne High School in Long Island from 1972-1999 and at the International Center of Photography in New York since 1978. Photographer Joseph Szabo’s subject is adolescence; his rare gift is capturing the spirit of his students at Malverne High School, caught between puberty and the precipice of adulthood. Taken in the 70s and 80s, the photographs in Teenage represent a remarkable evocation of that period, and yet there is something timeless and endlessly compelling about Szabo’s portrait of almost-adulthood. He said: “All these subjects and moments mean so much to me. They helped me understand people and allowed me to connect with them over the years. I hope they mean something to other people too.”

A project known as “Flowers for the People” replaces empty trash cans on city corners with elaborate eye-catching arrangements of flowers. The artist in question tries to use flowers that have been previously used to decorate events as a part of his work at Lewis Miller Design. In addition to adorning trash bins, Miller also uses his vibrant floral arrangements to spruce up the city’s statues and sculptures located in high-traffic areas. Among NYC public works of art to receive Miller’s signature floral treatment are the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park, the city’s famous LOVE sculpture in Midtown Manhattan and the Alice in Wonderland Statue in Central Park.
